ESI Africa, Africa's Power Journal, released an article about the risk of insolvency of rural electrification actors. The focus is on Mobisol, the Berlin-based pioneer in solar-home systems for rural electrification; they recently filed for preliminary insolvency proceedings under self-administration.

But this review of insolvency risk can raise question about the viability of business model in rural electrification, since rural electrification actors cannot fish for the wealthiest clients in target areas but have to deal with the realities in a particular village. They need to find enough off-takers around a centralized solar-power plant that can actually afford to pay for electricity. 2 of our grant recipients are listed in that article.

RVE.Sol is one of the GMG Facility award recipients. This successful financial partnership is a strong signal that the minigrid business model may be the least-cost, most viable solution to electrify the over 600 million Sub-Saharan Africans without electricity, this latest round of funding will enable RVE.SOL over the next six months to bring high-quality, renewable grid power and potable water to 15,000 people and create over 20 new community jobs in Kenya. RVE.SOL then plans to expand thislife-changing impact to another 50,000 rural dwellers across East Africa by 2020.
